Ryan Whiteside 3/8/2009 ECE 234 Essay on the humbug of Despereaux The tommyrot of Despereaux is a story about a banished mouse, Despereaux, the main just of the story who becomes the hero by saving the Princess from the dark and puritanic dungeon where the evil two-timers live. It is told in four sepa layaboute stories called books that centering on the stories of the main characters. Book the First tells of Despereauxs beginning, the second of the rat Chiaroscuro, and the third about the slave turned Kings servant, Miggory put. All the characters are brought together in Book the Fourth. Despereaux is a tiny mouse born with open eyes and large ears. He is seen as an oddball that is constantly sick and shows no concern in things a mouse should show kindle in. Then he hears music that the King is playing for his daughter, the Princess Pea, buzz off him to fall in esteem with the Princess and speak to her. He is caught doing this and is sentenced by the mouse coun cil to be sent to dungeon where he abandon for surely die from the rats in the dark. DiCamillo does an excellent job of passage moral values such as the virtues of nonconformity, the power of savor and the universal need for forgiveness and redemption.
